Introduction to the Edition

The 69th Eurovision Song Contest was hosted this year by the city of Basel, following Nemo’s win in 2024 with “The Code”. This was the Switzerland’s third time as hosts and the first since 1989. The 12,400 capacity St Jakobshalle was selected to stage the event. The presenters for broadcaster SVT were comedian Hazel Brugger, singer Sandra Studer and presenter Michelle Hunziker.

Thirty-seven countries participated, the same as in 2024. Moldova withdrew for financial reasons but Montenegro returned after an absence of two years.

Congratulations go to winners Austria and JJ who won with his song “Wasted Love”. This was Austria’s first win since Conchita Wurst triumphed in 2014. Once again, the jury voting proved decisive, with eight countries’ juries awarding Austria 12 points but no 12 points were awarded by the voting public, repeating the feat of Loreen in 2023. The public preferred Israel’s Yuval Raphael who received 13 sets of maximum points from the televoting but only one 12 points from the juries.

The difference between public and jury voting was perhaps the most shocking this year when Zoë Më achieved 214 points for Switzerland in the jury voting and was placed second, only to receive no points at all from the televote. We have taken a closer look at this phenomenon in this year’s book.

Israel and Estonia also finished in the top three, Estonia’s best result since 2002.

The “Big 5”’s performance was mixed again this year. Italy were the most successful, finishing fifth, France finished seventh and Germany 15th, but the United Kingdom once again received no points from the televote and Spain finished third from bottom.

This 17th edition of our guide to Eurovision contains even more records, data and statistics for every fan of the greatest Song Contest!
