Introduction to the Edition
The landmark 70th Eurovision Song Contest was hosted this year by the city of Vienna, following JJ’s win in 2025 with “Wasted Love”. This was the Austria’s third time as hosts and the first since 2015. The 16,152-seat Wiener Stadthalle was selected to stage the event. The hosts for broadcaster ORF were presenter Victoria Swarovski and actor Michael Ostrowski.
This was one of the most controversial Contests in recent years, with five countries boycotting this year’s competition over the participation of Israel and the war in Gaza. Thirty-five countries participated, two fewer than in 2024. We missed the protesting countries Iceland, Ireland, Netherlands, Spain and Slovenia but welcomed back Moldova, Bulgaria and Romania.
There was a change to the voting this year, juries voted in the semi-finals for the first time since 2022 and the number of jurors per country was increased from five to seven.
Congratulations go to first time winners Bulgaria and Dara who won with “Bangaranga”. There was the unusual phenomenon of the winning country finishing first in both the public vote and the jury vote. There was still a noticeable imbalance between the 12 points distribution this year though, only one jury awarded Bulgaria maximum points yet the public of nine countries believed Bangaranga was the best song. Israel and Romania also finished in the top three, Romania’s best result since 2010.
The automatically qualifying countries’ performances were mixed again this year. Italy were once more the most successful, finishing fifth, and France finished eleventh but Germany came third last, and the United Kingdom yet again received no points from the televote, finishing last with just a single point.
We’ve taken the opportunity this anniversary year to revamp the content of our Guide and for its 18th edition we have included many new statistics and visualisations.
